A global tier 1 oil and gas business invited Helipebs to design and manufacture 68 bespoke hydraulic cylinders rated at 10,000psi to be used in the subsea trees being manufactured for a new development in Norway.
The challenge
The cylinders needed to be a certain length, so the design had significant space limitations. We needed to take into account the design limitations without compromising the functionality of the hydraulic cylinders which needed to run reliably at the requested 3km below the surface.
Our solution
We were able to use our many years of experience and technical expertise in designing and manufacturing reliable solutions within this environment to create a bespoke hydraulic cylinder, using very specific raw materials and parts. To decrease the risk of leak paths and to help strengthen the cylinder, the piston and piston rod were machined in one piece. To improve the cost effectiveness of the cylinder, we designed parts in similar sizes which reduced machining set up times. Our solution enabled our customer to receive a fully compliant cylinder that was able to operate at 10,000psi within the constraints of the space available and with all the appropriate quality documentation right first time.
Key points
- A confidentiality agreement is in place between Helipebs and the customer. This allowed data to be shared freely between both parties so we could work together on the project as a partnership.
- Helipebs has been designing cylinders for more than 30 years within the subsea sector, so we were able to use our experience in both bespoke and subsea cylinder designs to provide the best possible solution within the limited space available.
- By fully understanding both the customer and the environmental requirements, we were able to quickly provide an excellent technical solution and to then manufacture to the highest standards.
- Our customer trusts Helipebs to deliver a quality product on time.
