1000 miles by bike in 3 days
A family from the South West is making a bid to change the face of Huntington's Disease by cycling the full length of Great Britain, over 1,000 miles, in just 3 days to demonstrate the relentlessness of caring for a loved one with Huntington's Disease, a fatal neurological condition, as well as raising vital funds for research.
The group of six riders, all family and friends, will set off from John O'Groats in Scotland on 12 May 2019 to cycle to Land's End in Cornwall, to raise awareness and funds for vital research at University College of London (UCL), where exciting ground-breaking discoveries are already pointing towards a cure. The group comprises Tony Terranova from Cheltenham, 62, husband to Jenny who is a HD sufferer, as well as daughters' partners, Chris Davis, 34, and Kevin Murphy, 40. The group is also joined by three long term family friends – Tony Cross, 40, Steven Connolly, 26, and Mark Connolly, 30. A relay of 3 of the riders will cycle 50 miles whilst the remaining 3 riders eat and rest in a support vehicle. Each of the participants are novices, having done no cycling before training began in September 2018. It is estimated that a daily distance of 150-200 miles will be covered by each rider for three consecutive days.
Huntingdon's Disease is often misunderstood and the Terranovas hope that the campaign will help to bring about urgent changes required for the assessment of sufferers' needs, and indeed their carers. They feel that many people are still dying young due to lack of education and care provisions in a system which is archaic.
